Bees & Wasps

Bees or Honey Bees, are usually brown in color with a bit of a golden color striped throughout. Bees also have furry bodies. Colors and amounts of fur on bees may vary depending on species. Bees are around 15 mm long and usually have an oval-shaped body. They have segmented bodies including: antenna, thorax, abdomen, stinger and legs.

Bees take great care in building their hives, which can be found largely in trees and crevices. They are considered social, as the worker bees are always out pollinating and fulfilling the queen’s duties. Bees are usually passive, but will become aggressive if provoked. Bee stings can be life-threatening to a person with an allergy. Below is a sound clip of a Bee:

Wasps are usually black and yellow in color with definitive stripes. Their bodies are most notable by their “waists.” Wasps also have two sets of wings. Another distinctive trait is the longer, rear legs that hang down during flight.

Wasps live in colonies that can hold up to thousands. They can be aggressive and sting. Unlike bees, Wasps can sting more than once and are most likely to swarm. Wasp nests are generally found under an eave, tree limb, or other horizontal surface in attics, garages, barns and, of course, outdoors.
